Legal issues about Councillors working in the highway

Your status as a county councillor does not authorise you to do work in the highway and you must not do so -  it is dangerous and illegal and exposes you to personal liability and it also exposes ECC to risk.

If you believe that there is an issue that could be resolved and is causing significant difficulty to highway users please contact member enquiries.

We have no objection to you, along with any member of the public, undertaking sign cleaning, clearing snow and ice (How to clear snow yourself | Essex County Council)  or removing small scale overgrowth vegetation but you do so at your own risk and mustn’t use power tools. You should never be opening inspection chambers or doing any digging.

Please do not hesitate to contact democratic.services@essex.gov.uk if you wish to discuss.
