Sensitivity Labels on Emails

When sending an email, you may be asked to select a category for your email when you press ‘send’.

You may also see the categories on emails you receive.

The classification affects how external recipients receive the email.

If you send it from your ECC email address or to a trusted partner organisation (eg the NHS or other local authorities)– all emails will be sent securely.

Otherwise, if you send it externally other than to a partner organisation then:

  • If you mark it ‘official’ it will be sent as normal
  • If you mark it ‘official sensitive’ it will be sent via a secure service which for many people means they have to log in via a website
  • If you mark it ‘official sensitive view’ it will be sent in a secure way and the recipient can view it but cannot edit, print or forward it on.

You should use ‘official sensitive’ if you are sending sensitive information such as information about people’s care needs or health.
